Beneath the shadows of Tokyo lies a horde of terrifying creatures known as "ghouls". These malevolent beings survive by feeding on humans, attacking under the cover of darkness. The Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG) was established to protect the people and eradicate the ghouls, but identifying them is a challenge, as they blend in with society by pretending to be human. Caught off-guard, Ken Kaneki - a university freshman - unwittingly becomes a part of the world of ghouls and humans when he discovers that his date is, in fact, a ghoul who wants to eat him.
