Operation Water Ghost

Kwon Hee-mang lives the life of an unemployed, stay-at-home hikikomori with no particular job or friends. But one day, after an unexpected accident, she gains the ability to see ghosts, and she ends up with a ghost named Kim Sarang clinging to her after meeting her in the hospital. Kim Sarang tells Kwon Hee-mang that she will obediently leave if Hee-mang helps her resolve her lingering regret. Kim Sarang's regret is none other than dying just one month after finally confessing to and dating the man she had a crush on (and she never even got past first base.) Sarang insists she wants to "borrow" Hee-mang's body to enjoy dating her boyfriend one last time before passing on. Before Hee-mang can even respond, Sarang possessed her body and rushes off to find him. Possessed, Kwon Hee-mang tracks down Woo Taemin, a college student eight years younger than her who has just returned to school after being discharged from the military and is enjoying a welcome-back party, She then proceeds to aggressively kiss him without warning. When the possession ends, Hee-mang is mortified. She just kissed a man nearly ten years younger, making her look like a crazy, jobless shut-in woman attacking a college kid. She flees in shame. Meanwhile, Taemin, who's a popular extrovert everyone in the department knows, finds the whole incident spreading like wildfire across campus. But instead of feeling humiliated, he's strangely excited. Because his ideal type has always been a bold, older woman. Taemin has fallen for Hee-mang at first sight...

Orochi

Orochi is a girl not of this world, that much is clear. Among a few other unique qualities of her, she is immortal. We follow her through the monstrosities she witnesses in her ongoing life; the terrors and horrors of this world considered 'supernatural', the real, true meaning of 'vain' and a few mysteries that are, perhaps, inexplicable, to name a few. Though they do not happen to her in particular, she does try to help out of the goodness of her heart. For the better or for the worse, that much is unclear.

Osorochi

This story was first published in August 1969 issue of COM. It’s the fifth story in the Nagatani Kunio’s parody theater series, which was later compiled in Bakashiki-Nagatani Kunio’s Collection of Plagiarized Works (バカ式: 長谷邦夫盗作全集, Akebono, 1970). The title, “Osorochi” (おそろち), is a play on the words “orochi” (おろち), another work by Umezu, and “osoroshii” (恐ろしい), which means “dreadful, scary.” The pun is kept throughout the story every time the word “dreadful” is used. Umezu Kazuo’s name is also written with different kanji. While his name is spelled “楳図かずお”, here, Nagatani & Fujio Pro use 梅図まずお (Umezu Mazuo) as their penname. The joke is that the kanji for “plum” (梅), which also reads as “ka” is used in his family name, and his given name was turned into “mazuo,” which is a pun on “mazui” (まずい), i.e. something that sucks.
