Exploring odd little ideas, Variant is a short manga serialized in Monthly Magazine Garo between 1992 and 1994 but was never collected into book format.

In 1992, Shintaro Kago began publishing what was supposed to be the first full-length manga of his career. Unfortunately, the magazine that published it, Bandai\'s Cyber Comix, was discontinued in October of that year and the manga remains unfinished to this day. Only three chapters exist. Kago did recycle the basic concept of a girl able to switch between our reality and a cyberspace-like spiritual realm in a later one-shot (ataraxia) and an even later different full-length work (Six Consciousnesses Thought Changing Ataraxia).

Miyu is the Guardian (or Watcher), whose duty it is to return the Shinma - god-demons that prey on humans - to the dark. She has the power to call forth fire, which burns Shinma and sends them to the dark. Her only companion, friend, and protector is Larva, a Western Shinma who is bound to serve her. Together, they hunt stray Shinma across Japan. How Miyu became a vampire is unknown, so is how and why she became the Guardian. However, more mysterious is the gift she bestows on the people she feeds from... Adapted from 1985 OVA.
A collection of seven of Hideshi Hino\'s terrifying and fantastic works. In \"The Blooming Forest\", the first story, the Cherry Blossom Forest is said to be a place that must never be approached. It is said that a beautiful but terrifying demon named Sakurahime lives there and kills people who pass nearby by inviting them into the forest. But Taro, who does not believe in demons, wanders deep into the forest because it is so beautiful and Sakurahime finds him... The fourth story, \"Mermaid in a Manhole\" was later adapted into the horror movie of the same name as part of the \"Guinea Pig\" series, with Hideshi Hino himself directing.
