Udagawa Gosuke, the protagonist, inherited his father's dojo after his father and elder brother were forced to commit hara-kiri. As a second son, it was not expected that he would inherit the dojo. This tragic event left him with a lack of self-confidence, causing him to practice fencing daily at a nearby dojo. The manga centers around Takeichi Hanpeita, a samurai who finds that he has traveled through time to modern day Japan. He is taken in by an old man who owns a cram school, and begins to work as a lecturer in the school.
